Who was Ernesto Castano?

A defender, Ernesto Castano was a professional football player from Italy.

He played for Legnano, Triestina, and Juventus throughout his club career; it was with the latter club that he won domestic championships. He participated in international competitions and represented Italy on the 1968 UEFA Euro-winning team.

Ernesto Castano was born on May 2, 1939, in Cinisello Balsamo, Province of Milan.

He certainly delivered on his promise. He was a fearless, strong, quick defender who could play full-back or defender and exuded confidence. He had the makings of a great captain and eventually became one.

Nickname “TINO”

In July 1963, Hurrà gave this account of Castano’s private life.

In a picture, he and his brother Giuseppe are shown playing draughts while their mother watches. Giuseppe was a part of Juventus’ youth team.

Golden Year

In 1960 and 1961, when the first two Scudetto titles were won, Castano was a young player vying for a spot on the squad, but in 1967 he was a near-constant.

In December 1966, while Juventus was pursuing Inter, the defender told Hurrà, “I trust in the game Mr Herrera wants Juventus to play.

Even though it seemed unlikely that Juve could overtake the Nerazzurri on the season’s final day, he reassured his teammates that they would win the Scudetto. He was the target of some jokes, but when the Old Lady captured one of her most illustrious league titles, it became clear that he was right.

Youth Coach

In the 1970s, Castano’s work with the Juventus academy complemented his professional career.

AIC Association

Castano represented Italy seven times between 1959 and 1969 at the international level, helping his nation win the 1968 UEFA European Championship at home.

On July 3, 1968, Castano established the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) in Milan along with several other football players, including Giacomo Bulgarelli, Sandro Mazzola, Gianni Rivera, Giancarlo De Sisti, and Giacomo Losi, as well as the recently retired attorney and association president Sergio Campana.
