Friends, players, and coworkers lament the tragic passing of Tustin High School’s top water polo coach. According to a GoFundMe post from his family, Francisco “Paco” Gonzalez went away on Monday “without any indications or indicators.” The cause of death wasn’t made public.
Gonzalez’s wife and two children, who are 2 and 6 months old, are left behind. According to the post, “His grin and laugh were contagious, something he gave on to his two lovely children who will have to grow up without him by their side.”
With his hair tricks and windshield-breaking, he was well-known across the community. Ed Carrera, the North Irvine Water Polo Club director, has announced that a candlelight vigil will take place on Wednesday at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine.
It is anticipated that hundreds of athletes, parents and USA Water Polo members will attend. Carrera cited Paco’s coaching philosophy as one that emphasised helping young athletes grow both as swimmers and as people. He was a staunch advocate for “student athletes” prioritising their studies.

Who was Francisco “Paco” Gonzalez?
Paco was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother, according to his family’s GoFundMe page. He died unexpectedly on Monday, January 2nd without prior notice or indication. His humour and grin were contagious, and he transferred those traits to two of his lovely children, who will now have to grow up without him by their side. He was well-known in the water polo community, where he participated in the sport, coached, and helped develop young talent.
His high school love is now his wife of three and a half years, and he met there where he spent a lot of time.
Paco was recently appointed an ODP coach in addition to teaching special education at Tustin High School, where he also served as the team’s head boy’s water polo coach. Paco also coached the club team at North Irvine.
He participated in the audio bass scene and alone created his bass truck. Because of his hair tricks and windshield-breaking prowess, he was well-known across the neighbourhood.
The most important thing about him was that he was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his wife, Jossy and their two kids, his mother and father, brothers and sisters, and a large extended family that already misses him dearly.

Coach Paco asked our kid to occasionally join his team in competitions because he had few options to play in Arizona. He never once treated our son like an outsider but with respect. Coach Paco’s influence is much appreciated by our team. He’ll be sorely missed.
A nightmare of a day it has been! Our son, our darling boy, breathed his last, leaving the rest of us distraught. We’re not sure how we’ll manage to get through this. I told her we had grown up in Santa Ana, and she was like, “Really?” Yes, my heart goes out to her and her family; no parent should ever lose a child; I know how it feels because I’ve experienced it, and it hurts like hell. I’m sending prayers and positive energy their way.
I worked with his mother, Veronica, and looked after his son Vincent, and this is tragic because his daughter was set to start daycare this week.
