What happened to Sione Veikoso?

The BYU Football team sent a message on their official Twitter page announcing the demise of a cherished player named Sione Veikoso.

In this incredibly trying time, Sione’s family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers on behalf of the entire BYU Football family. Peace be with you, Sione. The Lord be with you until we speak again.

Who was Sione Veikoso?

The Cougars initially recruited Veloso in the 2018 high school class before electing to join Oregon State.

Additionally, Arizona State and Washington State made him attractive offers. After graduating from Kailua High School in Kailua, Hawaii, Veikoso left for a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. He had to finish his task in Oregon because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

When Veikoso returned from his mission, he changed his pledge and enrolled at Arizona State. He started at Arizona State in January 2021 to further his education. Veikoso wore his red shirt during one of the Sun Devils’ games last season versus UNLV. He is, therefore, immediately eligible to play this season and has four more years of eligibility.

Veloso will be a part of a talented offensive line in 2021. When the club loses several stars to graduation, he will immediately increase BYU’s depth, but more importantly, he will still be eligible for many more seasons.

Veikoso reversed his vow and enrolled at Arizona State when he returned from his mission. In January 2021, he enrolled at Arizona State to begin his studies. Veikoso played for the Sun Devils against UNLV in one game last year while keeping his red shirt. As a result, he is qualified to play this season and for another four seasons after that.

The offensive line that Veikoso will be a member of in 2021 is loaded with potential. Even more crucially, he will still be eligible for several seasons by the time the team loses sure starters to graduation, instantly enhancing BYU’s depth.

Veloso is the fifth transfer from a Power Five school to commit to BYU in the 2022 recruiting cycle. He joins Oregon native Kingsley Suamataia, defensive back Gabe Jeudy-Lally, running back Christopher Brooks (Cal), fullback/tight end Houston Heimuli (Stanford), and defensive back Gabe Jeudy-Lally (Vanderbilt).

From Tempe to Provo

When Veikoso graduated from high school, the BYU staff under Kalani Sitake took note of him. Veloso is a 2018 prospect who is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 325 pounds. He first committed to Oregon State while still a two-star opportunity from Kailua, Hawaii.

Veikoso joined the Beavers after completing a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He switched from the Beavers to the Sun Devils after finishing his duty.

Veikoso participated in just one game for ASU during his redshirt season the previous year. The four years he has left to play for the Cougars at BYU. Veloso was called a “darkhorse potential” to start at offensive tackle for the Sun Devils in 2022 by Chris Karpman, an ASU Insider from 247Sports, during Arizona State’s spring practises earlier this year.

BYU keeps developing a talented O-Line room

Aaron Roderick, the offensive line coach at BYU, thinks the awful line room is “10 deep” and “Big 12 ready” after spring practice, and Veikoso joins him in that opinion. Left tackle Blake Freeland leads the squad. According to particular NFL mock draughts for 2023, Freeland might be selected in the first round.

The Cougars have veteran Clark Barrington at left guard, who might be picked again in the NFL draught the following year. Veloso is the fifth pledge BYU received during the 2022 cycle and the second offensive line commitment from the transfer portal.

Former five-star prospect Kingsley Suamataia, who transferred from Oregon, has joined him. In 2022, Suamataia is expected to start as the correct tackle for BYU.

Gabe Jeudy-Lally, a cornerback from Vanderbilt, Houston Heimuli, a fullback from Stanford, and Christopher Brooks, a running back from California, are other transfer commits from BYU.
