Who is Chris Beard?

Beard, 49, has been teaching in Texas for two years. Before taking over for Shaka Smart in 2021, Beard worked at Texas Tech for five seasons, leading the Red Raiders to the 2019 NCAA championship game.

Beard, a 1995 graduate of the University of Texas, has previously held coaching positions at Fort Scott Community College, Seminole State College, McMurry University, Angelo State, and Arkansas-Little Rock.

In exchange for a $5 million yearly compensation, Beard agreed to a seven-year contract with Texas when he was recruited. This clause is typical of UT coaching contracts. On Monday night at Moody Center, Rice will host Beard’s No. 2 rated Longhorns (7-1). Texas’ most recent contest occurred on Saturday when it triumphed 88-43 over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Texas has yet to formally announce if Beard will be the team’s captain tonight. Former head coach at UTEP and Fresno State (2018–21), is now the associate head coach, Rodney Terry (2018–21). (2011-18).

Why was Chris Beard arrested?

Texas men’s basketball coach Chris Beard was jailed on a felony domestic violence complaint, according to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, after he was charged with strangling a relative.

The 49-year-old Beard has been charged with third-degree assault on a family member. According to the Sheriff’s Office website, the charge is “Assault on family household member inhibits breath circulation.”

Beard was arrested on Monday morning at 4:18 local time, according to Austin police. He’s being held at the Travis County Jail right now.

Through a spokeswoman for the County Sheriff, questions were directed to Austin Police, but they did not immediately respond to a request for more details.

Officers were dispatched to a residential neighbourhood in the 1900 block of Vista Lane in Texas’ capital city, Austin, after midnight, according to Austin police, who claimed to have received a “disturbance hotshot” report.

According to the department’s website, a “hotshot call” is a situation that “is now taking place [and] poses an immediate threat to life and public safety.”

The Longhorns, who have a 7-1 record, are now ranked second in the Associated Press poll. They will go to Rice, a local rival, on Monday night. Beard graduated from Texas Tech in 2021 and is currently in his second season at Texas.

In his bio at Angelo State University, where he worked as a coach from 2013 to 2015, Beard states that he and his wife, Leslie have three girls.

In the years since, the 49-year-old has had coaching roles at Little Rock and Texas Tech, where he guided the Red Raiders to the 2019 NCAA championship game and won the AP National Coach of the Year title.

Even though Texas Tech would ultimately lose to Virginia in the tournament, Beard’s performance helped him land a rumoured seven-year, $35 million contract with the Texas athletic department in April 2021.

Did he assault a family member?

Beard is accused of choking someone inside a home in the Tarrytown neighbourhood of West Austin, according to Austin police spokesperson Brandon Jones. Police answered a 911 “disturbance-urgent” call on Monday at 2:07 a.m.
