Jesse Woodson James, an American bandit, train and bank robber, guerrilla, and head of the James-Younger Gang, lived from September 5, 1847, until April 3, 1882. James and his family had deep-seated Southern sentiments because they were raised in the “Little Dixie” region of Western Missouri. During the American Civil War, he and his brother Frank James joined “bushwhackers,” pro-Confederate guerrillas active in Missouri and Kansas. They were charged of murdering abolitionists and Union troops in the Centralia Massacre in 1864 as supporters of William Quantrill and “Bloody Bill” Anderson.
Jesse James’ Early Life
In spite of the seriousness of their crimes, Jesse and Frank gained national notoriety and frequently received support from the public after robbing banks, stagecoaches, and trains throughout the Midwest after the war as members of various outlaw groups. From roughly 1866 to 1876, when some of the gang members were killed or apprehended as a result of their attempted robbery of a bank in Northfield in Minnesota, the James brothers were most active as members of their own gang.
For several more years after that, they persisted in committing crimes and enlisting new accomplices, but the pressure from law enforcement to apprehend them grew. Robert Ford, a new member of the gang who wanted to collect the reward on James’s head and the promised amnesty for his prior crimes, shot and killed Jesse James on April 3, 1882. James was well-known during his lifetime and after his passing, he rose to legendary status in the Wild West.
Toby Woodson On September 5, 1847, James was born in Clay County, Missouri, not far from where Kearney is now.
