“It is with a heavy heart that we bring the sad news that former Andy Capp cartoonist Roger Mahoney has died. Roger was a comic strip legend and top man and will be very much missed. Our thoughts are with his family. RIP Roger”

Who was Roger Mahoney?

Roger was born in 1933 in Portsmouth. He went to art school. Following that, he worked as a cartoonist for English publications. While playing as a drummer for local bands, he also began painting cartoons for customers. Roger met Jim Henson, the person behind the Muppets, who produced the comic strip that accompanied the show.

Roger’s wife, Myra and daughter Sandra, and his sons Julian, Russell, and Terry survive him. Sandra continued, “He was a lovely guy.

” ten days before he died, he was still painting.”

Roger Mahoney’s professional life

In 1954, Mahoney submitted some of his pictures to Barry Appleby, who, together with his wife Dobs, Daily Express comic strip produced “The Gambols.” Barry encouraged Roger to keep going, and they subsequently became lasting friends.

Mahoney contributed to a number of publications on the British Cartoon Archive, including the Scottish Daily Record (“Agony Is” and “Sammy the Caterpillar”), Woman’s Realm (“Mum”), the Daily Mirror (“Millie,” “The Greens,” and “Mandy Capp”), the Sunday Express (“L”), and the Daily Star (“What’s in a Name?” and “Last of the Summer Wine,” the latter published between January 26 and Roger has worked for a number of publications, including Mandy Capp for the Mirror in 1997 and The Gambols. In the year 2000, he took over Andy Capp.

The transition was simple because of Roger Kettle’s authoring. When Kettle resigned in 2010, Lawrence Goldsmith and Company started writing.

Roger died at the age of 87 on November 14, 2020. Despite this, The Gambols was his last work until he died. 

“It was an honor and a delight to have worked with one of the legends of British cartooning,” Lawrence, a contemporary Andy artist, remarked. “Roger was a wonderful cartoonist who was incredibly humble,” Kettle continued. Lawrence and I relied on Roger to come up with fresh ideas regularly. His artwork would be combined with vintage comic images if a screenplay needed to be revised.

Roger Mahoney, a well-known cartoonist, died on November 5 at the age of 89. He died quietly at home, according to the report, and was killed by natural causes.

Roger Mahoney continued to design cartoons for the Andy Capp comics, After the death of creator Reg Smythe in 1998, which ran in the Mirror newspapers for the next two decades.
