A mother was forced to throw her baby from a burning building in Durban, South Africa.
Mother and child were saved and reunited. Neighbors and passing people also helped rescue other people trapped in the building.
The blaze was reportedly caused by looters amid the wave of protests and violence that has swept the country since the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma last week.
Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for refusing to testify in a case in which he is accused of corruption. He denies having committed crimes.
Amid the violence, dozens of people died and hundreds were arrested, prompting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to call for calm. “The path of violence, looting and lawlessness only leads to more violence and devastation as well as suffering,” he said in a televised speech.
The violence also affected vaccinations against Covid-19 – vaccination stations had to be closed for safety reasons. See the video.
