Opposition parties have said they will not run the by-elections

John Tramani Mahama, who carried the flag of the National Democratic Congress (CNT), filed a petition challenging the presidential results of the 2020 general election, according to the Election Commission.

Lawyers for the former president appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday to file a petition questioning the legitimacy of President-elect Nana Akubo-Ado. The decision to eventually occupy the Supreme Court came after nearly two weeks of protests by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) across the country.

According to prosecutors, the presidential decisions announced by the president of the electoral commission, Jean-Mensa, are flawed and “do not represent the will of the people”. NDC presidential candidate John Tramani Mahama also called the EC decision fictitious, claiming the results in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were false.

The results, announced by committee chairman Jean Mensa on Tuesday, December 9, are attributed to Nana Agupo-Ado of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with a total of 6,730,413 (51.59%). Among the votes recorded, John Tramani Mahama obtained 6,214,889 (47.36%) of the total votes cast.

However, former President John Tramani Mahama and the NDC argued that the verdict was against the ballot box and that they were in favor of the ruling party. The party’s position is firmly defended by CNT supporters who have taken to the streets to demand the annulment of the announced results.
