New batting cages and practice facility unveiled

Published on January 26, 2010 by Ben Poplin

The KSU baseball team has acquired a new facility to help them prepare for the upcoming season.  This facility will provide a space for players to practice; in previous seasons the weather has been an issue for both the baseball and softball teams.

“I’m impressed to see the layout with the batting cages and astro turf,” Mike Sansing, KSU baseball coach, said. “Paul Underwood did a great job designing the facility.”

The new addition for the baseball team will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. if the players want to come in between classes or during their free time.

Sansing feels that the facility is a positive addition for KSU athletes.

“Absolutely better from the facility,” Sansig said. “It’s going to give them an opportunity to do additional work on their own. The benefits are going to be tremendous for both baseball and softball.”

The main use of the facility will be by the hitters and catchers, but there is also a turf field where the players can stretch and condition.

Sansig said that the main positive about the facility is that it “allows the players to stay on a pattern and a schedule.”

In previous seasons, the team has had a tough time preparing for the upcoming season.

It was very hard for the team to stay on a schedule because of the unpredictability of rain and even snow. The facility will be available for use during the off-season as well as in the fall and year round.

“Early in the season, we should be farther along than in the past because of the weather conditions,” Sansig said. The team will be holding camps during their off-season.

The team is scheduled to start practicing in less than three weeks, but they are getting ahead of schedule with the acquisition of the new pitching/hitting facility.

The season opener for the Owls will be on Feb. 19 at home against the Liberty Flames.
