You are mindless sheep
Published on March 2, 2010 by Alessandra Largent
Do you know who your mayor is? Do you know who your representative is? Your governor? Senators? Do you know the branches of government? If you said no to any of these questions then you are just another sad example of everything that is wrong with this country.
The truth is that the American government is glad if you said no to any of those questions because you are just the kind of American the government wants you to be: ignorant. Blissfully unaware of a world outside of your recliner, your junk food and your Tivo is how the American government hopes to find the American people.
But why? Because sheep are easier to control, sheep are easier to appease and sheep are easier to slaughter. If you believe more of your government then you are not only a sheep, but a brainwashed sheep as well.
It serves a purpose that some should be lame while others capable, some smart while others stupid, but to what purpose and what side are you on? Sheep keep government fat-bellies fat; sheep keep government wallets fat as well. But the thing that sheep do best is to go along with whatever they are made to do, even unto their very deaths.
You will work for this country and you will die for this country, all the while with a stupid grin on your face. And for what? For what the American federal government has brainwashed you into thinking is freedom: a car, a house, a meaningless job and “American Idol.” This is what being a sheep is all about; this is what being an American is now all about.
Across campus, we are all studying to be a great many things. I am studying to be a political scientist. And I believe that most all of you are sheep. I believe you are made lazy and stupid and kept unaware by the government.
I believe you sheep have the wool of pop culture, fast food and television over your eyes, and that most of you will live, die and toil for a country that is using you, abusing you and asking you to thank them for it.
I also believe you deserve it.
If you are too stupid to pay attention to what is happening to you and your country; if you are too lazy to stand up for yourselves and your fellow countrymen; or if you are too Americanized to remember what being an American truly means, then I believe you deserve nothing more.
People have told me before that Americans aren’t stupid sheep, that Americans still have spirit and courage as well as chance at the future they were promised 223 years ago. But the more I study, the less I believe. I don’t believe in you-the collective “we” - of America. I don’t believe in “us.” We the people have become fat, lazy, mindless, ignorant and apathetic fools who stand up for nothing more than Starbucks and “Twilight” tickets.
But what do I know? Students of the Political Science Department of KSU are currently conducting studies to find out if you are in fact mindless sheep. To become involved feel free to e0-mail them at Lessa2205@yahoo.com. Or don’t. Baaa.

Great article. I wholeheartedly agree with you, but that’s no surprise, as I am a Franklinist to my core. Hopefully you can enlighten some of our generation who don’t happen to be as familiar with dear old Ben.

For the most part, I would except agree except…a dedicated programmer will leave her computer; a professional chef will stop planning a coming event; a sales rep for a roofing company will ignore his email; a student will ditch a few classes — to go to a political rally to protest wasteful government spending and outrageous overreach. People who are too busy to have ever protested before will do so now.
A family man will join the Air Force and serve for 15 years, a young single mother will join the Navy, an inner-city boy will join the Army. America produces enough well developed, mentally strong people to support the finest military, an all voluntary military, that the world has EVER seen.
The spirit isn’t dead, just usually busy with their own version of the American Dream.
Stacey Sternberg made a comment on March 3, 2010:
Love it! Though the question remains: how do you get them to wake up, pay attention, & do something? For those that see the slaughter in the horizon what should they do? It is one thing to tell a man to listen; it is another thing entirely to tell him the appropriate response. This is why persuasive speakers such as Hitler, Dr. King, & President Obama have been so successful. They take out the guess work. People want answers not questions. They want to know how anything they do can make a difference in the larger scheme of things- this is where statistical comparison can befriend your work. Inspire them with historical referrence and motivational, headline news ( like the boy from the UK who raised money for Haiti). Remind the people that one vote, one voice can make all the difference.
Thrillhouse made a comment on March 3, 2010:
Just a piece of advice: it’s a bit hard to claim that everyone is a mindless sheep and then not back up any of your claims or cite any kind of examples or empirical evidence to support your argument.
In other words, you’re essentially accusing people of mindlessly buying into unsubstantiated and untrue claims that politicians make, and then expecting me to listen to you as you do the exact same thing. Giving a stump speech on the danger of stump speeches.
Jeffrey Wilson made a comment on March 3, 2010:
Just because some people do not share the same passion as you have for politics does not make them mindless sheep…
Jorge made a comment on March 16, 2010:
It is dissappointing that a polisci major is unaware that if her audience does not like her anything she says, no matter how true, will go unheeded. You have gone to extreme ends in this article to alienate your audience. Also, as Thrillhouse stated above, a little more evidence near the beginning would help your argument. It is surprising that a polisci major would make such bold, self-righteous claims without evidence. It is very amusing that you say “studies” are underway “to find out if you are in fact mindless sheep” at the very end of the article, AFTER you have made the bold and unambiguous conclusion that people around you are sheep. The beauty of free speech is that dummies unveil themselves proudly, like homosexuals in a gay pride parade.
obamacheney2012 made a comment on April 27, 2010:
What proof needs to be made? Do you expect the Government to put out a study on how they have yanked your chain for the past 65 years? No. If you really want proof to the claims then just ask the next five people you talk to the questions listed at the top of the article. It doesn’t matter that the claim was “bold and self-righteous”. Bold and self-righteous claims need to be made in the society we live in today. We are a mindless herd, whether liberal or conservative.
