Re:SGA: More dollars than sense
What is Student Government Association (SGA), and why do we deserve your hard-earned money? You already pay enough for your tuition and fees, so why should we get a portion of your student activity fee?
Simply put, our purpose as SGA is to be YOUR voice to administrators, faculty and staff on issues that matter to you. In the past year, we’ve represented you by reducing the cost of the mandatory meal plan, creating the KSU Vision forum series last fall, acting as a catalyst to create the Football Exploratory Committee (chaired by Coach Vince Dooley), encouraging university administration to accept the Bartow County land gift and promoting diversity on campus by recommending that administration adopt Strategic Goal Six.
In order to accomplish critical goals such as these, SGA uses its budget to encourage students to voice their opinion through forums, finance key events, compensate its officers for their time and dedication, finance its operations, and develop future leaders of the university. Rest assured, SGA’s spending is restricted to the uses outlined in the RSO manual (available online at ksustudent.com under Student Life Forms, RSO Manual 2009).
Any voting officer of the SGA (senators, secretaries, and others) may write a resolution regarding an issue or may bring a proposal to the floor of the Senate. During the past three meetings, the SGA Secretary of Academic Affairs, Brigitte Becquet, proposed that SGA fund the purchase of four massage chairs for the Student Center. This issue was discussed over the course of the meetings. We received student input as well as officer input, and the proposal was voted down with 20 opposed, seven in favor, and three abstaining.
KSU SGA is YOUR representative body to administrators, faculty and staff, and meets every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Please find our schedule online at KSUSGA.com. We look forward to seeing and hearing from YOU at our next meeting!
