That’s what (s)he said

Studying abroad is an excellent way to earn course credit while being immersed in another culture. Students often find that their outlooks and worldviews are broadened and that the life experience gained on these trips is matchless. KSU offers study abroad opportunities in a variety of countries for different lengths of time. There are also scholarship opportunities for such trips. What do KSU students and faculty think about studying abroad?

Ashley Boyd, junior, English education
“I went to Italy for the fall semester in 2009, and it was amazing! I took four classes and received 12 credit hours. We stayed in apartments in our small city, and I roomed with five other girls from KSU. It was great because we had to learn the language since we were immersed in it.”

Dr. Rochelle Harris, literature and writing professor
“I went to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland while I was at University of Tennessee studying for my master’s degree. It was an interesting program called the Scottish Appalachian Exchange where one year, students from Edinburgh would come to UT, and the next year, UT students would go there. We studied issues in Scottish history that intersect with American history.”

Rakan Nassereddin, freshman, international affairs
“Hopefully, I will be able to go to France next summer with Georgia Tech. They have two campuses in France, one in Alsace-Lorraine and the other in Paris. HOPE scholarship will cover a portion of it, but I would have to pay for room and board, which will be around $8,000 a semester.”

Tamrah Patterson, freshman, nursing
“I would like to go to Spain. I love the culture, the easy pace and their lively attitudes. I love the slow pace of life and how they have siestas in the afternoons, but then there is the extreme side, with the running of the bulls. I would want to go for a few months, long enough to get to know the area. ”

Jon Reagan, freshman, information systems
“I think that doing a study abroad would be really cool. I would like to go somewhere where technology is really big, like Germany. Going for a full semester would be pretty cool. HOPE would pay for some of it, and my parents would pay for the rest.”

Graciela Olivares, senior, international affairs
“I spent a semester abroad in 2008 in Montepulciano, Italy. It was awesome. We lived there and had classes. We were very much a part of the community, tied into the culture, and we got to know the people living in the town. You get so much experience from being away from home.”
