Owl Radio accepting costume contest entries

Published on October 20, 2009 by Melissa Butz

Owl Radio is accepting photo entries until Oct. 26 for its Owl-oween Costume Contest.

Participants are to send their first names, names of character(s) and pictures of their costumes to HalloweenContest2009@ksuradio.com. Only one entry per student is allowed, but the staff is open to awarding prizes to couples.

Owl Radio staff members will vote for their top three choices Oct. 27-30, and a winner will be chosen around Oct. 31.

The top three winners will be awarded an Owl Radio prize package. The package will contain a T-shirt, pen, bumper sticker and a $5 gift certificate to Hemingwayz, located in University Village.

“We figured [the contest] would be a good way to get in the spirit of the season and do some giveaways,” said Kevin Schmidt, general manager of Owl Radio. “Owl Radio is working hard to involve students, faculty and staff with events on and off campus.”

Nadia Abdulahi, a member of the Owl Radio promotions team, came up with the idea for the costume contest.

“I was trying to come up with a fun and interactive contest for students,” said Abdulahi. “Then I thought, ‘why not have students send in past costume pictures and then have the radio staff vote on their favorites?’”

Abdulahi is also the person responsible for receiving the pictures and posting them on a blog for the Owl Radio promotions team to view.

The contest winners will be displayed on the Owl Radio Web site, ksuradio.com, along with the station’s Facebook fan page. The winners might also be invited to the studio to speak on one of the radio’s programs.

“I think that the contest will be a success for the station,” said Abdulahi. “It’s involving students and the radio staff members, so I believe it’s a win-win situation for all involved in the contest.”

Abdulahi has been on the Owl Radio staff since January 2008. She also came up with the “Win a Date with a DJ” contest in February 2008.

Owl Radio will continue having its DJs announce the contest onair. It is also being advertised on Facebook and Twitter, and the rules and regulations are listed on Owl Radio’s Web site.

The radio staff has plans to distribute fliers around campus this week to make more students aware of the costume contest.

Six entries have already been received within the first week.
