Nigeria pitted against Haiti in home-cooked competition
Published on November 18, 2008 by The Sentinel
Nigerian and Haitian food was served for students and a panel of
judges to taste, in a cook-off sponsored by the International Student
Assn. (ISA) and the Haitian Student Alliance.
The event was held Mon. Nov. 17 in the University Rooms, and pitted two friendly student rivals against one another.
During a recent trip to Puerto Rico, students from Nigeria and Haiti were riding in two different canoes when the Nigerians’ boat knocked the others askew. Thus, the rivalry began.
“We finally said, ‘Let’s do something official,’” said Nechama Hilaire, secretary of the Haitian Student Alliance, who had been a passenger in the “Haitian” canoe. The competition took form, and all the various dishes were home-cooked. The result of the judging was announced at the end of the meal: Nigeria won by a narrow margin.
The event was held to also raise awareness about Haiti, a Caribbean nation that students have found to be overlooked.
